L'Oréal choisit Miss Monde

30/06/2008

"Estoy compitiendo conmigo misma.

Miss Trinidad & Tobago Universe 2008 Anya Ayoung-Chee is counting on you to vote for her online

Exclusive Interview by Ian Royer, Lonsdale Saatchi & Saatchi

Well I was finally able to get through to Ms. Ayoung-Chee in Vietnam (the phone services are difficult to get through there and the connection died very quickly so I will try again tomorrow). I was able to tell her about her placements online and chat a bit about what she has done during her trip. With regards to her activities so far she has visited 3 cities in Vietnam: Hanoi the capital, Ho Chi Minh City and Hué, and the experience has been unforgettable. She is really in awe of the unique culture and the people of Vietnam.

After I told her the placements on the various websites and a few of your well wishes, I asked if there was anything she wanted to say:

“Wow, I can’t believe that I am leading, it is so hard to tell what’s going on here because information is secular and our schedules are very packed. I really want to so say that the support from everyone is overwhelming and very touching! It gives me a lot of motivation to perform the best that I can to represent my country and my people! Thank you all so much again, you have no idea just how much it means to me.”

Keep the love coming guys! I will have more for you tomorrow for sure!
I wish to give special thanks on behalf of Anya and the Pageant Company to Mr. Akanath Singh on for all of the good work he has done promoting Anya! He started our group, and handed out materials on his own initiative to really push for support! Kudos Akanath!

That’s all for now, thanks again for the overwhelming support! We need your clicking fingers again very soon, this year the National Costume Competition will be done via online votes! More information on this will be forthcoming very soon.

Beautiful touch-down

Miss World 2007 Zhang Zi Lin is in Vietnam for a series of charity events including visiting HIV/AIDS centers, and attending ceremonies to present charity houses and scholarships.
Landing in Ho Chi Minh City last night, Miss World 2007 Zhang Zi Lin sent a message to the Vietnamese contestant in this year’s Miss Universe contest: be yourself.

In a white T-shirt and black pants, the 24-year old beauty smiled to local media and said she loved the beauty of the HCMC Post Office and Vietnamese noodles, especially Pho 24, a well-known chain of noodle soup restaurants.

This is Zhang’s second trip to Vietnam. The first was a year and a half ago, before she won the crown.

Teresa Sam, first runner-up to Miss Vietnam Global

Zhang, accompanied by Miss World Organization’s Chairwoman and President Julia Morley and the first runner-up to Miss Vietnam Global, Teresa Sam, is expected to do a series of charity events sponsored by U.S.-based blood product producer RAAS Group during her trip.

These include visiting HIV/AIDS centers, attending ceremonies to present charity houses and scholarships throughout Vietnam.

Zhang and Sam will also attend a flower parade next Monday in Nha Trang Town to welcome the upcoming Miss Universe 2008 competition.

“I’m very happy to be [back] here to help out because when I went home, I missed Vietnam,” said Sam, who told the Vietnam beauty at Miss Universe to “smile” and “show the world exactly how Vietnam is.”

RAAS CEO Hoang Kieu, a Vietnamese American, told local media before the trip that he invited Morley to drop by Vietnam as the preliminary step to the country bidding to host Miss World in 2010.

“We are not yet making a full plan, we are only looking to understand,” Morley said after landing in Vietnam for the first time yesterday.

Morley said the most important factor for Vietnam in her bid to host Miss World would be for the Vietnamese people to really “want it”.

“It’s not just Miss World coming in, it must be with the people’s blessing and it must be the people and Miss World working together.”

But the first step, she said, was for Miss World and Vietnam to “get to know each other.”

Athina James off to wow the Universe

Saturday June 28 2008

At 5' feet 11" inches, All Saints resident Athina James is hoping to stand tall above the other delegates during the hosting of this year’s Miss Universe Pageant and bring the title back to her homeland of Antigua and Barbuda.

Unable to host a local pageant due to financial constraints, Director of the Miss Universe Organisation Calvin Southwell undertook a search where a number of pageant hopefuls were interviewed.

It was James, though, who stood out and who was selected as this year’s representative.

Perhaps little known by the masses, James is a homegrown woman who has her roots set firmly in All Saints Village. Her early education began at the J. T. Ambrose Primary School and later continued at the Antigua Girl’s High School and the Antigua State College.

As James suggests in her biography, growing up for her wasn’t about being the little "sugar and spice" wearing frilly dresses.

“I was an adventurous tomboy who enjoyed fishing in nearby ponds, taking long walks in the countryside…,” she shares.

Recently she has taken up dance class to improve her dance ability and she is currently signed on as a model with Southwell Inc.

Speaking to the Antigua Sun, Southwell said James is currently in Vietnam working alongside 79 other delegates in preparation for the pageant which will be hosted on 14th July. While in Vietnam, James will participate in fashion shows and charity auctions.

As is customary, each delegate is required to bring two national gifts from her country which will be auctioned for local charity.

James opted to take along a coal pot (complete with a yabba) and a warri board, two items that can be regularly found in Antigua and Barbuda.

Southwell shared that it hasn’t been easy to send a delegate to the Miss Universe Pageant on a yearly basis.

Funds in the form of donations and sponsorship have been practically non-existent, but Southwell is of the view that one year Antigua and Barbuda will rise to the top of the pageant scene internationally.

“Antigua and Barbuda has always done well. Shermain [Jeremy] was judged the most talented woman in the world when she went in for Ms. World and we all remember when Kai [Davis] did us proud when she won Miss Congeniality when she entered the Miss Universe Pageant,” he revealed.

So with lack of funds how does Calvin Southwell send delegates year after year?

“I dig into my own pocket,” he said resignedly. “I do it because I have high hopes that one day Antigua and Barbuda will excel.”

Fortunately for him, because he’s a designer and a trainer he has effectively managed to cut costs considerably. Rather than having to hire people to design and make her clothes Calvin Southwell created her entire wardrobe and offered her modelling training as well.

He credits Sascha Cosmetics of Trinidad and Tobago for being the only corporate entity that has stepped forward to donate a full make-up line of products for James.

Despite the challenges, Southwell has sent James off to Vietnam (spending $10,000 out of his own pocket for her airfare) and is hoping to join her shortly to cheer her on 14th July when James steps onstage and thrusts Antigua and Barbuda into the heart of the universe.

Bring it on

Nguyen Thuy Trang (Thuy Lam) performs in the National Costume Show held in Binh Duong Province last Sunday. She finished in the top 10.

The Vietnamese contestant at next month’s Miss Universe pageant in Nha Trang is getting along well with the other girls but is keen to take them on.

Nguyen Thuy Trang, the 2008 Miss Vietnam Universe, has always had a high profile. Trang, also known as Thuy Lam, was one of the 10 winners at last Sunday’s National Costume Show where she wore a dazzling, elaborately hand-embroidered ao dai.

In a less elaborate but stunning white traditional tunic, she was also among the five nominees for the Best in Ao Dai title at Thanh Nien’s charity show Duyen Dang Ao dai (Charming Ao Dai) last Tuesday.

Thanh Nien spoke to her to find out how she is preparing for next month’s Miss Universe grand finale.

Thanh Nien: How do you feel at the moment?

Nguyen Thuy Trang: I feel quite tired and under pressure, but I take good care of myself and keep to the schedule drawn up by the organizers.

I’m eating a little more than usual these days to gain some more weight.

You can’t see your family or friends now. Are you affected by this? Who is your roommate now?

I feel quite sad, but we still keep in touch by telephone. I haven’t been in the best frame of mind since my family and I have to take care of many things [preparations for the contest] ourselves.

I’m sharing a room with Anya Ayoung-Chee of Trinidad and Tobago. She is very nice and eager to discover Vietnamese cuisine.

You have lived for more than a week with the other contestants. What are your impressions of them?

They are quite different from each other but what they have in common is their sound knowledge of make-up, fitness and clothes.

From our conversations, I discovered they all got professional training to become beauty queens. When representing their country at international beauty pageants, they get advice from agencies to choose outfits and performing styles. This puts them at an advantage.

What aspects of Vietnam have you introduced to the others?

They ask me about a lot of things. What they are most interested in is the ao dai I wore a few days ago.

I explained to them the differences between the traditional ao dai and stylized modern ones. I also showed them the most attractive ways of sitting, walking and performing in the traditional Vietnamese costume while preparing for Thanh Nien’s charity show Duyen Dang Ao dai (Charming Ao dai). They have all marveled at the bewitching, demure beauty of our ao dai.

The girls are also very excited about sampling Vietnamese cuisine. They are so eager to try different dishes and I promised to show them around Ho Chi Minh City and introduce local dishes to them some day.

However, the hot weather has taken its toll on them.

The media blew up your last-minute change from Vo Viet Chung’s five-meter-long ao dai to a Thuan Viet piece at the National Costume Show. Were you affected by this?

My family and I were quite upset about it. But I don’t read newspapers or care much about what people have said about me in the last few days. My family and I have to take care of so many things on our own, so I really hope people are understanding.

I’ve been giving my best. I always keep in mind that I participate in this pageant not just for myself but for my country, which spurs me on.

Actually, I didn’t think there would be such a fuss about my ao dai change. I simply thought I’ll wear the outfit I feel most comfortable in while on stage.

Themed Vu khuc hac (Dance of Cranes), the ao dai designed by Thuan Viet was modeled on those worn by Queen Nam Phuong [wife of Bao Dai, the last king of Vietnam]. The outfit is a gorgeous blend of red and royal yellow, which accentuates the elegant grace of Vietnamese women and conveys a triumphal significance.

The combination of intricate hand-embroidered patterns in gilded thread, crystal, pearls and diamonds makes it a resplendent work of art. The costume was to my liking and I think I made a right choice.

So what are your major difficulties now?

There are several difficulties ahead.

One of them is that we’re pressed for time, having to make preparations in just 15 days while the other contestants have had one year’s preparation before their coronation and entry into this pageant. I don’t even have enough time for make-up, hairstyling and choosing outfits.

Some people don’t understand my worries; they just kept asking me to do this and not to do that, which stresses me. I represent the host country, so I need to be stress-free. I need everyone’s encouragement and cooperation to fulfill my mission.

What do you want to say before the pageant’s final stages?

I’m quite perplexed these days. Encouragements from the audiences will be a great source of strength for me to compete in the pageant.

I promise I’ll make the most of what I have. But I hope whatever the results are, I’ll always have everyone’s enthusiastic support.

Miss Universo 2008

No more Miss Universe tours

VietNamNet Bridge – Travel firms are now refusing all requests to book tours to Nha Trang city to see the Miss Universe 2008 pageant.

Miss Universe contestants

“This is a rare chance to directly watch the Miss Universe pageant. Foreigners have to travel thousands of kilometres to Vietnam for this event. My family is ready to pay several thousand USD for a trip to Nha Trang but all travel agents say they are out of tickets for the pageant,” said Long, a businessman in Hanoi.

Hong Yen, an employee of a media company in Hanoi, was lucky to book a tour to Nha Trang two weeks ago. She said: “My family and two other families decided to combine summer holiday with Miss Universe pageant. This is the first time Vietnam has hosted the contest so we are very keen on it.”

Schedule of Miss Universe pageant in Nha Trang:

- June 29 evening: welcome party

- July 2 evening: swimsuit show at Vinpearland

- July 3, 4, 6 evenings: Gala Night

- July 8 evening: final performance

- July 13 evening: final competition

- July 14 morning: crown ceremony

Travel agents say it is very difficult to book tours to Nha Trang at present because hotels in the city are fully booked. “We have had to refuse hundreds of customers because we couldn’t book rooms for them,” said Luong Duy Nga, Director of Newstar Tour.

Viettran Tour offered tours to Nha Trang very early and it has booked 200 visitors. “We are very surprised to see many Vietnamese book tours for Miss Universe pageant but we can’t meet their demands at this moment because it is too late to book hotel rooms now,” said a representative of Viettran Tour.

Saigontourist carefully prepared for Miss Universe tours so it can serve a large number of tourists. Tours from HCM City to Nha Trang city to see the Miss Universe competition are priced at VND1.8-2.9 million per person (not including Miss Universe tickets). However, Saigontourist only offers tickets for the three major shows of Miss Universe 2008: the final performance, final competition and the crown ceremony. Tickets for the two first events are between $25-500 and $50-1,800 for the third.

Meet NZ's Miss Universe hopeful

< It's a long way from Paraparaumu to Saigon, but that's where Horowhenua hottie Samantha Powell is mixing it with the world's most beautiful women. Images of Miss Powell at the New World Hotel in Saigon have been released ahead of the 57th annual Miss Universe pageant at Vietnam's Nha Trang resort city on July 14. Miss Powell, a 20-year-old bank worker from Paraparaumu, scooped the Miss Universe New Zealand crown in April. Challenges Miss Powell overcame to be crowned New Zealand's most beautiful woman included a round of golf, a trip to Waiheke Island and some gruelling interview questions, Miss Powell told the Dominion Post after the competition. "They were things like: if you were to choose a country to give humanitarian aid to, which one would it be? And how would you cope if you were competing at Miss Universe?" She told judges she would like to visit schools in Cambodia and Vietnam and try to increase awareness about the importance of education. An extra challenge for her was her height - 1.78 metres (5 feet, 10 inches). "Because I was one of the tallest, I was usually first up for everything." As for whether beauty pageants were demeaning to women, Miss Powell was clear. "Not at all. "I feel it's great for young women. "Beauty is on the inside and outside. It's good for your confidence." Judge Jack Yan agreed, saying brains were becoming more of a feature in pageants and the women had to be all-rounders. "Obviously, they're all very beautiful . . . but I like to think we can spot a phoney." Mr Yan - who described himself as the equivalent of American Idol's notorious judge Simon Cowell - was heckled after quizzing the women about globalisation and the concerns of young people. In the end, Miss Powell had been chosen because she had "X-factor" qualities - including a "very good conscience", Mr Yan said.

HA NOI — The 81 contestants participating in the Miss Universe 2008 beauty pageant began their first visit to Ha Noi yesterday.

Yesterday morning they met with representatives of Ha Noi’s People Committee, visited the Temple of Literature and walked along the Hoan Kiem Lake.

Paula Mary Sugart, president of the Miss Universe Organisation, expressed her joy at the hospitality shown to them by the Vietnamese people which she and the contestants would always treasure.

Last night, they met with their respective ambassadors to Viet Nam and heads of diplomatic missions during the Ambassadors Gala Dinner to promote cultural exchanges between Viet Nam and the rest of the world.

"With its tradition of hospitality, benevolence, faithfulness and respect for beauty as well as its pursuit for truth, good, and beautiful, Viet Nam has the great honour of hosting this year’s event," said Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan at the gala dinner.

Nhan also commented on the participants saying that they weren’t only contestants of the Miss Universe 2008 but were special beauties visiting Viet Nam from around the world.

"I hope when you return to your home countries, you will become good will ambassadors for Viet Nam and spread the message that ours is a hospitable, peace-loving nation desiring to be friends with all countries in the world," he added.

"The ambassador gala not only shows the Vietnamese government’s consideration for such a significant cultural event, but also expresses the Viet Nam’s gratitude to all the countries and regions for sending their beauty queens and also co-operating with the country in many sectors," said Pham Sanh Chau, head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Department of Culture, during the press conference in HCM City last week when the contestants first came to HCM City.

Before coming to Ha Noi, the contestants visited the historic city of Hoi An in Quang Nam Province on Wednesday.

They spent time visiting Nam Hai Resort and the Palm Garden Resort, and joined in entertainment activities including beach volleyball, surfing, and playing Vietnamese folk games on Hoi An beach. The contestants also observed the daily lives of local fishermen.

In the evening, the contestants took in the sights on cyclos via a parade through Hoi An’s main streets, and joined a performance of traditional costumes, where each participant’s country dress was represented.

The 57th Miss Universe beauty pageant will be held at the Crown Convention Center (Diamond Bay Resort) in Nha Trang on July 14 where outgoing title holder Riyo Mori will crown her successor. — VNS

Hôi An accueille les Miss

Miss U organizers admit spelling error on Miss Philippines' sash

By REYMA BUAN-DEVEZA

abs-cbnNEWS.com

The Philippines' bet for Miss Universe, Jennifer Barrientos was given an official Miss Universe sash that misspelled her country's name. "Philippines" was spelled with two Ls instead of one.

In a photo published in seattlepi.com's Miss Universe Gallery, picture number 22 shows that Barrientos wore the misspelled sash, while sitting with Madina Taher, Miss Germany; Charlotte Labee, Miss Netherlands; and Vera Krasova, Miss Russia, during a party on June 20th.

Reports said it took almost three days for the Miss Universe Organization to correct the error. Other reports say the error remains in the official program book.

In an exclusive statement sent to abs-cbnNEWS.com by Lark-Marie Antón, the spokeswoman of the Miss Universe Organization, she admitted that a mistake was committed but said they instantly rectified it.

"Unfortunately, there was an error which was immediately corrected," Antón said.

Antón didn't explain further regarding who was responsible for the error.

She just appealed to all Filipinos to support Barrientos by tuning in to the pageant.

"We hope the Philippines will be watching as Jennifer competes for the crown on July 13th on NBC," Antón said.

Names of countries are occasionally misspelled on official pageant sashes, sometimes causing ill feelings.

During the 2006 Miss Earth pageant the official sashes for Guadeloupe and Bosnia & Herzegovina were misspelled- Guadaluope, Bosnia & Hercegovina.

All set for Miss Universe 2008

Two weeks from now, viewers will be fixing their eyes on television screens as 80 beautiful candidates from all over the world compete for the 2008 Miss Universe crown.

Vietnam will play host to the event, to be held at the Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa.

Prior to the final night the candidates have already been presented to the press. They have also finished their pre-pageant show, for the parade of their national costumes.

The Miss Universe Organization has already announced that the host of NBC’s hit summer show, "America’s Got Talent," Jerry Springer and actress-singer Mel B will host the 2008 Miss Universe Pageant live on NBC.

The announcement of the show's hosts was made by Paula M. Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organization. It was published on the official Miss Universe website www.missuniverse.com.

The first 'Miss Earth Jamaica' crowned

Marcia Rowe, Gleaner Writer

Simone Burke will represent Jamaica, in Manila on November 9, in the third largest global pageant, as the first Miss Earth Jamaica following her crowning at the Knutsford Court Hotel in St Andrew, on Sunday.

After a brief introduction, Ms Burke was invited onto the stage. Shortly after, the smiling but speechless Burke was sashed and crowned 'Miss Earth Jamaica', by Jo-Anne Archbald, a representative from the Ministry of Information and Culture, to the flashing of lights from a significant number of cameras.

Criteria for selection

The criteria for the selection of the queen were not given (despite attempts to ascertain them) except that Ms Burke, a former Immaculate Conception High School head girl, was chosen from a number of applicants after pre-screening and interviews and that next year, a committee will be formed to choose the new Miss Earth Jamaica.

The Posh Entertainment Production's one hour programme, preceded by cocktails, started promptly at 7:30 p.m., and was hosted by broadcaster and singer Andrew Lawrence. Lawrence was also one of two performers on the show.

Wonderful renditions

In his melodious voice he filled the small Blue Mountain Suite with John Denver's Annie's Song, Jeffrey Osbourne's The Greatest Love Affair and after the crowning of the Queen he serenaded her with Eric Clapton's Change the World.

Also, providing entertainment was Tanice Morrison with Michael Jackson's Heal the World and her original, For You Mother, in this case mother is in reference to 'mother earth'.

While the organisers can be complimented on their attempt to help save the environment by participating in yet another 'beauties for a cause' pageant, it is recommended that next year's selection process is transparent and well publicised. After all, the queen will be representing Jamaica. Is that asking too much?

Established in 2001 and organised by Carousel Productions, the Miss Earth pageant, which is ranked third behind Miss World and Miss Universe promotes the event to address issues concerning the environment.
